Biographical Review on the occasion of the exhibition “Piel”. Linares

Jaime Martínez Arribas (Valladolid 1980) is an artist with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca and a Higher Technician in Advertising Graphics, who lives in Palma de Mallorca and combines his artistic activity as a painter with that of a graphic designer.

Under the title “Skin”, Jaime presents a set of recent paintings and drawings in which we can admire how this artist treats the theme of the nude.

The representation of the human body has been a constant in the history of art, from prehistoric times – Venus of Willendorf – to the present day, artists have been interested in the nude, sometimes with an idealizing sense of the human body, as happened in Ancient Greece, through the enormous interest aroused in artists during the Renaissance the study and representation of the human body, was added to the beauty of the body the representation of the beauty of the soul, the character. At times, representations of mythological themes were mere pretexts for depicting the human body. It is in the nineteenth century when we can see nudes, stripped of all symbolism, nudes that only show aesthetic aspects of the human body and in the twentieth century artists have developed a type of non-idealized nude, to eliminate the traditional concept, and interested in the search for the essence.

Jaime Martínez Arribas presents us with a group of works, most of them in oil, in which he shows us nude figures that appear alone in an interior and other times on a monochromatic background, stripped of any reference to a specific space, creating an atmosphere that envelops the figure and accentuates its expressiveness. Figures, of great sensuality, that appear self-absorbed in themselves and other times they look at us establishing an intimate relationship with the observer. The framing he uses, mostly close-ups, makes us feel that in some works we are invading the intimacy of the figures represented. The broad, material, vigorous brushstrokes and the strong luminosity radiated by the figures intensify their nudity. Jaime is an artist who with a contemporary look reflects on the human person, his loneliness and seeks the essence of the personality of the figures he represents.
